Background
The SWEETIE online platform introduced in this event is one of the project deliverables under the e-Learning Ancillary Facilities Programme (eLAFP) funded by the Quality Education Fund (QEF). As the project grantee, the Education University of Hong Kong developed the platform over two years with the support from 80+ participating schools.
The e-content developed in this platform for primary schools aims to provide a “One-Stop” support for implementing engineering design in the new primary science curriculum and to realise the vision of “STEAM for ALL” in schools. Specifically, the SWEETIE platform features:
• A spiral curricular structure integrated with the new primary science curriculum;
• An innovative 7-Step SWEETIE (Situation, Wondering, Envisioning, Exploration, Thinking-back, Innovation, Extension) pedagogy for cultivating student creativity;
• A “Teaching + Assessment” one-stop solution, closely aligned with teachers’ needs;
• Efficient implementation through a Learning Management System (LMS), catering to both learner and teacher diversity;
• A unique training method, enhancing teaching skills and confidence in just 2 hours; and
• Regular on-site professional support to facilitate school development
To date, 65 primary schools have adopted the SWEETIE curriculum, training 600+ teachers and benefiting 15,000+ students. With the support of the online platform, after just two hours of training, teachers feel confident to teach engineering design in their science classrooms.
Objective(s)
1. To present how the SWEETIE online platform can provide a “One-Stop” solution for implementing of engineering design in the new primary science;
2. To give teachers hand-on experience in using the SWEETIE platform and teaching kits; and
3. To share the experiences in using the SWEETIE platform to implement the new primary science curriculum in authentic classrooms across different types of schools.
